Feature Documentary | 2025

Filmmaker Maarten de Schutter attempts to reconstruct the lost memories of his mother, AIDS activist and feminist anthropologist Martine de Schutter. Ten years after she was killed by Russia in the Donbas War, Maarten tries to assemble what’s left behind of her life and their shared past.

My Sweet Child explores memory, death and the unique relationship between single mother and child. Not having any true memories of his mother, Maarten tries to bring her back to life through film. Using VHS-tapes, photographs, letters and conversations, Maarten sketches an intuitive tale of love and loss. A devastating journey along the battlefield of memory, showing the impact of war and the necessity of resistance and remembrance.

My Sweet Child had its world premiere at the 2025 Docudays UA Human Rights Film Festival in Kyiv. The film was nominated for a Golden Calf at the Nederlands Film Festival 2025, the most prestigious award in Dutch film.
